Floral Crown 'Behind the Scenes'

As you would all know, I own an Etsy shop selling custom made floral crowns (see HERE). I've been getting a few emails regarding the making process for a while but I never provided an answer.

Mainly because, there really isn't anything spectacular about the creation of these accessories. The photos above should give you a sufficient look into the 'behind the scenes' process of my 'label' (notice how they're in inverted commas, so please don't expect anything Chanel fashion studio worthy).

Let me spell it out for you simply:
1. I don't own a studio. I make my crowns on the same table in which I do my homework and I store my spare flowers in an unwanted suitcase.
2. It's not a tedious task. An episode of Skins or Revenge should see you to the completion of one crown. For best results, I put on my hour long playlist of Lana Del Rey (on repeat of course). She really does set the mood.
3. Once they're done, I go to Australia Post who sends it out in one of those (iconic) brown parcels.

I do just want to thank all of my followers who has supported this hobby turned business either through the amazing comments or the purchase of a crown. I love that fuzzy feeling after knowing that a parcel is heading towards an eager customer. It also thrills me to be messaged that I've made somebody day brighter and happier. This store has personally opened up a lot of doors; it's now stocked in a Brisbane boutique called Rocket Science (shop HERE) and my Etsy picture has been chosen as the (for the lack of a better word) face for an event in L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2013 (see HERE).

Chanel Haute Couture S/S 2013

The theatricality at Chanel never ceases to amaze me. Lets think back; Swedish icebergs at F/W 2010, underwater magic complete with Florence Welch singing in a giant clam that was S/S 2012 and who can forget the runway filled with gigantic wind turbines at S/S 2013. The list can go on forever so with Chanel's past history of drama filled shows, I would expect nothing less.

As a student who studies Shakespeare, it's hard to overlook the reference to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The feathered models with those smudged smokey eyes to me is the perfect portrayal of Titania's fellow fairies. The styling was by no means obsessive compulsive. But it evoked this languid atmosphere as if all were woken from a deep slumber by the arrival of an audience into the Grand Palais.

Such a vision was paralleled by the garments drifting down the runway in the form of tweed capes, thigh high lace boots and floral applique gowns. I particular loved the emphasis on off-the-shoulder necklines, sometimes directly obvious but other times an illusion created by careful layering. Of course, Karl Lagerfeld must always imply a deeper message in his shows, sending down a lesbian bride as the final look. Way to create a lasting impression!

Do you ever get that moment when you stand in front of your closet and think 'I've got a wardrobe full of clothes... but nothing to wear'. Your eyes hastily wander from garment to garment as you try to connect these fragmented pieces into a decent combination.

I always feel like outfits and day to day dressing is a bit like a puzzle. Some people are just natural who can place each jagged part next to another forming a cohesive bigger picture... whereas some (like me) take ages figuring out the concavities.

Although, continuing on with this metaphor, dressing is also NOT like a puzzle. There's only ever one way in which you can (correctly) fit those funny little shapes. One does not simply cut the rounded corners off with scissors nor fill the concave areas with glue. However, figuring out a 'look' requires a non-linear way of thinking. There's always so many different combinations one can wear things and each can tell a completely different story. It's a concept where filling in the spaces is necessary and cutting corners is sometimes encouraged. Therefore, seemingly irrelevant pieces can somehow pull together and create a unique picture which is something a linear puzzle can never do.

I came across this interesting quote which to me just solved a complicated riddle. 'If fashion is a pair of jeans, then style is what you do with it' - unknown origin.

Once Upon A Time: Chopard Disney Collection

As a little girl, I've always wanted the magical wardrobes of the Disney princesses, believed that singing to birds would miraculously make me a new dress and totally convinced myself that I could grow hair the length of a building.

Growing up, I've accept that those goals were ... unreachable. But that didn't stop luxury jeweller Chopard from being inspired by the Disney essence. Collaborating with London department store Harrods, Chopard has designed a Haute Joaillerie (which means fine jewellery) collection capturing the spirit of the major Disney princesses.

Time to start reminiscing of your childhood as this is the stuff of dreams.

Those were the lyrics that initially inspired this look. Such a beautiful metaphor, can you just imagine a bright red rose literally bursting through the concrete? Powerful stuff ...
I've always wanted to shoot with my massive THE DEL REY crown along with a red rose in my mouth. There's something so Lana Del Rey about that picture and it's perfect since she's my other muse for this post. Well that minuscule dream came true today complete with cobalt blue, lace cut outs and an explosion of flowers. I also have to give a shout out to today's arm candy in the form of oversized zippers and animal claws (courtesy of OASAP... shop HERE).
In all honesty, a bit of Coldplay, a bit of Lana Del Rey never hurt anyone.

Spell & the Gypsy Collective

Time to plan your trip to Byron Bay Australia... if not for a holiday then just to visit the gorgeous boutique which is Spell & the Gypsy Collective. Established by sisters Elizabeth and Isabella, the label channels 'their inner gypsy spirits'. 

Feathers, shells, fringing and turquoise make up the bulk of their design aesthetic. All these elements imply such a raw perspective on fashion, stripped off any artificial glam as if their pieces are the fundamental basics of survival. The newest lookbook with a bohemian and carefree vibe makes me wonder: what is study anyways when you can run away to the desert clothed in maxi skirts?

Officially the first post of 2013 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

With the request of my friend to make a floral crown for a NYE celebration, I ditched an end of the world rave party (congratulations everyone for surviving) and opted to sit on my ass and channel my inner genius and creativity. All jokes aside, the result of the anti-social 3 hours was the mother of all floral crowns ... so intricate and complicated to make. Trying to tackle all the stubborn wire made me so crazy I had to punch a pillow in the midst of the mayhem.

This cursed crown however ended up being the center piece of this look in which I styled all the pieces accordingly. I'm wearing shorts from Paint It Red which was sent to me from winning an Instagram contest ($500 worth of clothing). My styling train of thought was literally this simple; floral accents on shorts compliment the flowers on my crown, shorts have black lining ... so black shoes and top will tone down the craziness ... pink belt: well that just works with the general colour palette.

Final Note: Shooting on the road is dangerous... don't try this at home kids.
