Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival has now come to an end and I am pleased to say that my very first experience at an actual fashion shows didn’t disappoint. The pieces were amazing, the atmosphere addictive and the fashion, left, right and centre, all too inspiring. But the moment engrained into my psyche was not that of the silhouettes or nuanced details of the clothing, but the eye-opening advice given by a man bunked beside me in the shrouded media high-riser.

Unfortunately I have totally forgotten the name of this masked man (I know, what an idiot) but his American accent and extensive knowledge of the fashion industry is that which should be admired. From our passionate exchange, the thing that stuck me the most was education – education of who and what each designer is, means and stands for; and to how their collections and pieces have come to fruition.

So with that said and done, this outfit was my attempt at dressing myself in labels and pieces that I have conceptually learnt about – trying to educate myself on where a piece or design has come from, what it means and the inspiration behind it.

Fashion is about knowledge and understanding. It is not simply just ‘what looks good’ or ‘what looks bad’ – but the emotion, knowledge and heritage weaved within its threads.

With that said, from top to toe, the labels I am wearing are: Fallen Broken Street, Quay Eyewear Australia, Stray for Roger David, ASOS Australia, Country Road and Shubar for Hype DC.

TRENDING: Wide Brimmed Hats

From Pharrell’s Canadian Mountie inspired Vivienne Westwood headpiece at the Grammy’s to the sartorial creations of Christopher Bailey, wide brimmed hats – and hats alike – have been creeping their way into the fashion spotlight.  Felt or suede, over-sized, floppy or structured, headwear of the calibre is just what the Australian summer calls for.

Whether you’re lounging on the beach basking in the warm summer rays, exploring the vast expanses of the Australian landscape or simply walking the high streets, brimmed hats are the go-to accessory for practicality and effortless cool. So with that in mind, it seems almost a sin not to jump on the band wagon.

Of course not everyone can afford the technicolour creations at Burberry. Or the luxurious pieces crafted at Lanvin. So I’ve found solace in the beautifully constructed pieces at Fallen Broken Street and Lack of Color. If anyone knows the who-is-who in wide brimmed hats, these two are truly a head above the rest (pardon the pun).

From the streets of Byron Bay, Fallen Broken Street is the go-to for you stylish world travellers and crazy cool kids. Their hats have sat atop of some of the world biggest celebrities such as Cara Delevingne.  Their cutting edge pieces are made from excellent craftsmanship and some of the finest material money can buy. They also stock beanies, caps and gloves and now too, mini version of some of their best-selling pieces for children alike. I’m personally eyeing the Dingo in Wine or the Cove in Black - definitely a summer essential.

Channelling a more sophisticated approach to the humble headwear is Lack of Color - clean, minimal and exuding an understated class. These pieces are incredibly versatile for all you ladies out there – take it to the beach, wear it out with friends or even as the ultimate accessory to dress up an outfit on a night out. Made from the finest wool, they are perfectly trimmed with genuine leather or metallic gross-grain ribbon. 

I personally know that Sharon loves Montana Silver Haze. For a trans-seasonal piece with an understated sophistication, the creations at Lack of Color are seemingly impossible to pass by.

I even managed to grab a shot of supermodel Shanina Shaik amongst the paparazzi frenzy that surrounded her.

Winter dressing became a whole lot of fun at Fashion Week FW 2014/15. Seen on the concrete sidewalks were unexpected layerings of printed scarfs with blockcolour coats to quirky accessories in the form of knee-high socks and a fluro worker vest. Finally street style gold could not have been achieved without the reappearance of ski goggles circa FW 2013/14.
These pictures above are all evidence of how the fashion elite braved the cold - some with grace and others with pure light-heartedness. We can definitely take some style cues from these ladies in New York.
