Secret Garden A/W 2013

How many people can say they started a label at 18 years? Most girls at that age are probably on their gap year, applying for uni or working at Maccas.

I want to introduce an emerging Australian label to you called Casper and Pearl. It was created by 'an eighteen year old self-taught designer with nothing but big dreams'. Yes, you read correctly ... she's so young, self-taught and very successful. Her label has already exploded; being on big publications such as Teenvogue.com and also seen on many popular fashion bloggers. 

Personally, it's Casper & Pearl's vintage and innocent aesthetic that caught my eye. Knowing my love for the feminine and romantic, I can safely say that her design vision is quite on par with my style. The newest collection 'Secret Garden' showcases such a whimsical perspective of winter; florals here, floral there, it's as if every picture came straight out of a hazy daydream.

Beginning of autumn ... what I refer to as that awkward period; cold early morning, hot at midday before my hair gets tossed by the wind in the afternoon. Mother Nature’s PMS at its best! So let’s talk transition pieces.

With the hormonal temperatures, layering becomes your best friend. I don’t just mean coats over jumpers over thermals. Even a shirt under dungarees can be categorised as layering. In this case, I've styled my overalls (courtesy of Boohoo) with a studded plaid shirt where the red tone serves as the perfect background for the acid wash denim. Plaid is one of the most obsessive trends seen again and again on the recent autumn/winter 2013/14 runways (I’m looking at you Celine, Givenchy and especially Moschino).  Toned down by black buckle boots inspired by those iconic Balenciaga pairs and also a simple fold-over clutch (thank you OASAP), this outfit was on so many levels ... workman cool.

I’ve realised in summer, my style is all la-de-da floral crown romanticism but come winter... it’s utilitarian, militaristic and all sorts of masculinity.

Dungarees Dressing

If you've never heard of the term 'dungarees', you probably know them as overalls. Still don't know what I'm talking about, then the best description I can give you is an all-in-one-over-the-shoulder-bib-with-legs-holes (use your imagination!) Originally used as protective clothing for farmers and mechanics, it WAS considered quite a standard blue collar garment.

However, not in my book and apparently not in many high profile designers'. Personally, I've taken a liking to the dungarees after remember my childhood running around in denim mickey mouse ones (yes, so stylish). Internationally, the overall was heavily featured in the Spring/Summer 2012 collections and is still making it's comeback for spring 2013. 3.1 Phillip Lim steered away from typical denim and reinvented this 'peasant' piece with hot pink suede or black leather. Speaking of reinvention, Moschino for S/S 2013, toyed with playful cuts outs and added an explosion of floral  Other designers include Ralph Lauren, Isabel Marant as well as high street stores such as Guess, American Apparel and Free People.
